A watches purpose is to look at something for an amount of time. They have
been around since the early 20st century. The watch has solved the problem of not knowing the
time and being able to look at it in a quick glance. The apple watch, apples newest product
since the iPhone in 2007, was predicted to be extremely successful. The Rhetoric of the
technological sublime is the idea that technology is just going to make the world better. Clearly
Apple believed by infusing a phone into a watch was going to make everyone's lives better, but
they were solving a problem people didn't have. Much like google glass making what a phone
can do more accessible doesn't make the world a better place. The more technology in the
world continues to distract, disconnect, and consume our communication skills.
One of apples advertisements exclaims, "Glances. Just the right amount of information,
right where you want it." This is a distraction for you to the world and others around you by
always looking at your watch. The Greeks would define this type of interaction as idia. Idia is
that you are in your own world and not participating in community awareness. The apple watch
is a perfect example of a modern day distraction from participating in public affairs. Not only can
you see your notifications on your wrist but you can also feel them. Most people wouldn't resist
to look down and exit a conversation or interaction to check their watch. This advancement of
technology is an unnecessary distraction to people.
Technology also disconnects people from society and interactions with others. My high
school adapted a onetoone iPad learning program my junior and senior year. Many negative
effects came because of this change. Instead of coming into class and talking to the people next
to you, you could just sit on your iPad and play games or surf the web. It was a noticeable
decrease in communication in the classroom, not only between students but with teachers.
Technology was a big distraction for many kids which kept them from listen to the lessons and
their grades suffered. The idea of rhetoric of the technological sublime is unproductive to the
well being of people's communication skills and distraction to people's focus.
The Greeks centered their society around communication while we are moving in the
opposite direction with products like Google glass and the apple products. Democracy is based
around conversations and debate. Democracy was defined as, free gatherings of neighbors, in
Ancient Greek. Without communication and the invention of growing products that prohibit our
interactions our democracy will be wounded. With our faces always in devices, we lack
communication with those we know and strangers. This defeats the whole purpose of
democracy which is having conversations.
The Rhetoric of the technological sublime is not a useful belief in the way society is
advancing today. Advancements in technology aren't continuing to make the world a better
place. They are distracting people from public conversation. Technology is new places such as
school cause distractions from studies. The use of accessible technology 24/7 is hurting our
ability to communicate. Luckily for us all the apple watch has hardly been successful.
